Hawker Hurricane Mk I P3175

257 (Burma) Squadron Royal Air Force

RAF Martlesham Heath Suffolk England

Stone Point, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, England

Hurricane P3175: The aircraft was shot down during combat with

Me110’s at 16000 feet over Clacton on Sea, Essex, UK.

Pilot P/O Gerard H. Maffett bailed out at low level but was

killed when his parachute failed to open.

The wreckage was excavated in 1973, displayed and stored

before arriving at the Royal Air Force Museum 1977/8.

In 1978 we were tasked with preserving the wreckage of P3175 in an outbuilding

at RAF Hendon prior to the opening of The Battle Of Britain Hall.

Maffett’s Hurricane had been on display until closure of the

Battle of Britain Hall in 2018. It is currently believed to be

in storage at RAF Cosford.
